In a recent turn of events, UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH) has been diligently working to counteract the effects of a significant cyberattack on the U.S. health system and Change Healthcare services. This unprecedented event has posed challenges for both consumers and care providers alike. However, UnitedHealth Group is making strides towards mitigating the impact and providing support where it’s needed most.
One of the key steps in this journey is the release of medical claims preparation software by Change Healthcare, starting today. This software will be gradually rolled out to thousands of customers in the coming days, with third-party attestations expected prior to full service resumption. The restoration process will proceed through multiple phases until all customers are reconnected.
Andrew Witty, CEO of UnitedHealth Group, expressed optimism about the progress made so far: “We continue to make significant progress in restoring the services impacted by this cyberattack.” He also extended encouragement to healthcare providers facing challenges, urging them to reach out for assistance.
UnitedHealth Group has already taken substantial action to assist care providers affected by the cyberattack, having advanced over $2 billion through various initiatives. Recognizing the fragmentation within the U.S. health system, the company is committed to enhancing funding support accessibility, ensuring care providers can access assistance seamlessly.
To further aid care providers, UnitedHealth Group has temporarily suspended prior authorizations for most outpatient services and utilization review of inpatient admissions for Medicare Advantage plans. Additionally, a dedicated program has been established for financial assistance. Care providers in need are urged to register for the program on the Optum website to explore pre-populated funding assistance levels. Those requiring additional support or clarification on eligibility can utilize the temporary funding assistance inquiry form or call the provided hotline.
UnitedHealth Group remains transparent in its communication efforts, hosting detailed update calls for customers, care providers, and their information security teams. Furthermore, the company has launched educational webinars to guide providers and customers on reconnecting to claims and payment networks, as well as accessing temporary funding assistance programs.
